How to Organize Your Garage (And Reclaim Your Parking Spot!)

A well-organized garage in a yellow-painted house.

Are you tired of playing a game of Tetris every time you have to add anything to your garage? It’s time to reclaim your spot and turn your garage into a functional parking and storage space. Not only can it benefit your car and make your life easier, but having a functional parking garage can also maintain the value of your home. Future buyers will be able to see the home’s full potential and envision their life in a clutter-free space.

Follow these simple steps to turn your garage space into a well-oiled machine.

Step 1: Install a workbench to house tools. A simple workbench is an ideal space for DIY projects, minor repairs, and a gardening station. Before installing, measure out space for where it functionally fits best in your garage. Choose one with built-in storage to house frequently used tools, and you’ll have an efficient workspace for all your needs and hobbies.

Step 2: Hang a pegboard with hooks. A pegboard is a versatile storage solution that allows you to neatly hang tools, gardening equipment, and other items. Combine one with shelving, and give yourself the feel of your own personal hardware store. Or hang one behind your workbench for easy access to your tools while working.

Step 3: Install shelving and cabinets for larger items. The key to a well-organized garage is having a designated spot for similar items. Keep bulkier items like buckets of paint in their own cabinet. Store lawncare and cleaning products on the same shelves. This way, everything is much easier to find and out of the way.

Step 4: Invest in vertical storage. If you have any bikes, rakes, or sports equipment, install vertical storage options like slat walls, hanging brackets, or ceiling racks for any items that take up too much floor space. Now you’re using maximum area space, while also keeping those items safe and making it easier to regularly sweep.

Step 5: Store holiday décor if needed. No room indoors? Consider storing clear, labeled bins of items like holiday ornaments, lights, and trinkets in your garage. You can use the space under your workbench or install tracks to hang the bins on the ceiling.

By following these tips, you can use your garage for its original purpose while maximizing every inch of storage space. Roll up your sleeves and you’ll be done in no time!
