8.2 million people moved to a new state in 2022. Up from 7.9 million in 2021. Represented nearly 20% of all movers.

This continues a decade-long trend of rising state-to-state migration, even though the number of movers has declined overall.

Recent data shows this trend may be slowing, as the median moving distance decreased from 50 miles to 20 miles in 2023. Closer to the previously-held norm of 15 miles.

Top reasons for moving in 2022 and the percentage of respondents who chose that reason: Housing, 41.6%. Family, 26.5%. Work, 16.1%. Other, 15.9%.
